Applying for an NIE number in Spain: what it is and how it works
Text
If you want to buy a property in Spain, you will soon encounter the NIE number. This identification number is essential for many administrative and financial matters. Without it, for example, a property cannot be registered in your name. This article explains what an NIE is, why you need one, how to apply, which documents are commonly required, the costs and processing time, and the difference between an NIE and residencia.
What is an NIE number?
NIE stands for Número de Identidad de Extranjero. It is a personal identification number for foreigners carrying out administrative or financial transactions in Spain. The number remains the same throughout your life. It is almost always required when buying property and is also used for taxes and official registrations.
Why do you need an NIE?
Spanish authorities and other organisations use the NIE to identify you as a foreign buyer. Besides purchasing a property, it may be needed to open a Spanish bank account or enter into certain contracts. Exact requirements depend on your circumstances.
Applying through a Spanish consulate
You may be able to apply through the Spanish consulate responsible for your place of residence. An appointment is usually required, during which you submit the necessary documents. This route can be useful if you want to arrange the number before travelling to Spain. Processing times vary, so check the current procedure and appointment availability with the consulate.
Applying for an NIE in Spain
You can also apply in Spain. First make an online appointment, known as a cita previa, with an authorised police or immigration office. The authority checks your documents and processes the application. Appointment availability varies by region and waiting times can be longer in popular areas.
Which documents are required?
Exact requirements can change, but applications commonly require:
- a valid passport or identity card;
- completed form EX-15;
- proof of payment using Modelo 790;
- supporting documents explaining the purpose of the application.
Always check the current list in advance to avoid having to rearrange your appointment.
EX-15 and Modelo 790 explained
EX-15 is the formal application form on which you enter your personal details and reason for requesting the NIE. The administrative fee is paid using Modelo 790. Keep the payment receipt, as you will usually need to present it with your application.
What are the costs and processing time?
The application fee is generally modest but may be adjusted annually. Processing times also vary: sometimes the number is issued quickly, while in other cases it may take several weeks. The location, workload and appointment availability all play a part.
The difference between an NIE and residencia
An NIE is often confused with residencia, but they are different. The NIE is solely an identification number for administrative purposes. Residencia concerns your legal residence status in Spain. Having an NIE does not automatically mean that you officially live in Spain.
Prepare your application carefully
Understanding the steps and documents will help you prepare. Always check current information from the competent Spanish authority because procedures, forms and charges can change. For questions about your personal situation, consult the authority or an independent legal professional.
