The kingdom of Spain, along with Portugal and Gibraltar, forms the Iberian Peninsula, also called Iberia. The peninsula is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean and the Bay of Biscay. Spain is the largest country on the Iberian Peninsula. The peninsula’s rich history has made Spain an incredibly diverse country, with many influences from the time it was conquered by the Moors and the later colonial era from the 15th century onward, among others. The Moors in particular have been a major influence on the well-known Flamenco.

Fifteen autonomous communities

Spain can be divided into 15 autonomous communities. This subdivision was also enshrined in the 1978 Constitution, the first constitution after Franco’s dictatorship. Of these communities, the Canary Islands, Catalonia, Madrid and Valencia are by far the best known. Castilian is the only official national language of Spain. There are also four official regional languages; Catalan, Basque, Galician and Aranese.

Climate

Today, Spain is especially popular for its sunny Mediterranean coastal climate, the mountainous north on the border with the French Pyrenees and the trendy Balearic and Canary Islands. Because of the irregular and mountainous landscape, very different climates can be distinguished. The Mediterranean climate is the most common, but in addition the subtropical climate (the Canary Islands and around Málaga and the coasts of Granada), the desert climate (around Seville) and the high mountain climate (near the Pyrenees) also apply.

Finally, Spain is known for its diverse cuisine that includes traditional Cava, Sangría, tapas, jamón, Paella and Gazpacho. The internationally famous Spanish tortilla, Calamares a la romana (fried squid) and cocidos (stews) are also very popular.
